81 and Starting Singing Lessons – Dad’s Musical Adventure

In the last three months, my 81 year old dad has started learning music, and I’ve never seen him more alive. He’s playing the aerophone beautifully, learning to sing, and now tackling the guitar. Watching him embrace this new chapter has been a true inspiration, and it’s a beautiful reminder of the power of lifelong learning.

Positive psychology teaches us about the profound effects of hope and joy. For my dad, learning music has ignited a spark of hope—hope that there’s always something new to discover and joy in the process of mastering something unfamiliar. Every time he picks up the aerophone, his face lights up with excitement, and it’s clear that these moments are filled with deep happiness and fulfilment.

Research from neuroscience supports that learning new things, especially in later life, strengthens the brain by forming new neural connections. Engaging in music is especially powerful—it activates multiple areas of the brain, improves memory, and enhances cognitive function. For Dad, it’s not just about playing an instrument; it’s about keeping his mind sharp and challenging himself in ways he never thought possible.

What’s really special, is how he shares this journey with others. (Even Mum loves it, even though it’s taking over her home.) Whether it’s playing a tune for family or talking about his progress, the joy he radiates is contagious. Sharing positive experiences, like learning music, creates stronger bonds and amplifies the sense of accomplishment and connection.

My dad’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and find joy in new pursuits. If we all could embrace life with his enthusiasm, the world would be a brighter, more hopeful place.

Dad is an inspiration, and I’m honoured to share his journey.
