You sit down to focus…
And within minutes, you’re distracted.
Email.
Phone.
Random thought. “Oops, I need to pick up the dog from the vet.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s what most people get wrong.
It’s not a discipline problem. It’s an environment problem.
After reading Stolen Focus by Johann Hari, one thing became very clear to me…
It’s not just you. None of us can focus like we used to.
What is actually going on?
Research shows the average worker switches tasks every 3 minutes.
(And yes, we all like to think we’re above average. 😉)
Every time you switch:
- You lose time
- Your concentration fades
- Your thinking becomes shallow
- Creativity drops
Even worse…
Constant interruptions can reduce your effective IQ by around 10 points.
That’s not lack of effort. That’s cognitive overload.
Why your brain feels “scattered”
Your brain is doing exactly what it’s designed to do. Scanning for threats, novelty and rewards. And modern life is full of them.
Notifications.
Emails.
Social media.
Endless distractions. All competing for your attention.
Because here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Your attention is now a product. Tech platforms aren’t designed to help you focus.
They’re designed to keep you scrolling and coming back for more. (You vs billion-dollar algorithms… not exactly a fair fight.)
The hidden cost of lost focus
When your focus is fragmented, you wind up feeling busy, but not productive. You lose momentum, motivation and are left mentally exhausted. And over time, you start to question yourself. “Why can’t I just get my head in the game?”
I hear this all the time. However, technology isn’t the whole story.
Most professionals I work with are also dealing with:
- Lack of sleep
- Long working hours
- Constant interruptions
- Conflicting demands
- High stress
So even when they finally stop, their brain doesn’t.
Rebuilding your focus
Focus isn’t about trying harder. It’s about removing friction and rebuilding capacity.
A few simple shifts:
- Choose two key priorities each day
- Block time to work without interruptions
- Turn off notifications (even briefly)
- Protect your sleep
- Be fully present in small moments
Your ability to focus shapes everything. From the quality of your work to your health choices and even your relationships at home.
This is one layer of the Positive Mental Health Program. We focus on helping you get your head in the game, so you can think clearly, stay focused and show up in a way that matters.
